Don Smith

A native Calgarian, Don graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Calgary. He established DSI Estate Planning Inc. in 1979. Don is professionally designated as a Chartered Life Underwriter, Family Enterprise Advisor and Trust and Estate Practitioner; CLU, FEA, TEP.

Don is a Founding Member of the Conference of Advanced Life Underwriting (CALU) in Ottawa. CALU ( works closely with the Department of Finance in setting tax policy for life insurance products available to individuals and business owners. Don has presented to CALU on a number of occasions on the creative use of life insurance for estate planning and business succession.

Don’s community involvements include Board membership on The Calgary Foundation from 1999 to 2008. Don was the Founding Director of the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise (CAFÉ), Calgary Chapter, from 1991 to 1995. He continues to serve as an Advisory Committee Member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute since 2004.

Don is the strategic developer of the IEP™ Insured Endowment Program which uniquely helps wealth holders to enhance their charitable legacies. This proprietary program was established by Don after he successfully co-implemented a $50M endowment.

Frequently requested throughout Canada as a speaker on the effective use of life insurance for wealth holders, Don spoke in February 2014 at a local chapter of The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) on the topic:
‘Innovative Insurance Strategies for Wealth Holders’.

Don is married to Susie, they have 3 children and 4 grandchildren.
